It has been a while since we’ve come across a phone that embodies powerful specs and a fantastic camera, in a beautifully designed case and we feel it’s time to share this with you, our readers. We will go into one of the most striking features of the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact phone, the 20,7MP camera, an impressive achievement which is best demonstrated by comparison with some of its competitors. This is why we’ve tested several cameras on high-end models, such as the iPhone5, the Samsung Galaxy S4, the HTC One, the LG G2 and a Panasonic Lumix GH2. We’ve described the results in the section below, so keep reading…
We will continue this review of the Sony Xperia Z2 and Z1 Compact by explaining how we obtained the images with the cameras attached to these two devices. Firstly, settings were left on Superior Auto mode for all scenes we shot, because we consider that most users prefer this setting themselves when venturing out to take photos. It is our personal belief that very few people actually make use of the maximum 20,7 MP resolution, which produces huge photos. Furthermore, the Superior Auto function provides users with a digital zoom feature and also adjusts the scene by itself – which can be a huge help for beginners who want to dabble in the art of photography by using a high quality device that provides them with great results. We did not use other modes other than the default ones and if we did, we promptly specified them accordingly.
It’s not easy to classify how sharp and crisp colors are reproduced by a smartpohne’s camera, since this particular aspect is very much dependant on what you actually photograph, scene by scene. However, you’d be surprised to notice that if using to a Sony Xperia Z1 or a Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, both cameras will produce a neutral color tone and provide you with similar results that you would expect from a proficient camera.
On to the competitors, some of their cameras produce results that simply look either dull or too exposed, other times not vivid enough – as is the case with the Samsung Galaxy S4 or the LG G2, whose results sometimes seem too bright, although overall the phones do take good pictures. Others, like the HTC One camera, seem to decide for themselves, depending on the situation, how to produce results – sometimes it will produce pictures that are overexposed, other times they will be neutral, on occasion it produces cold and distorted shades of green and yellow on certain details, depending on a particular situation. Finally, at the other end of the spectrum, some cameras generate results that we as users enjoy, partly because they somewhat enhance the scenes we photograph, in an unnatural way: for the iPhone 5, the camera makes photos look pleasantly warmer than they are in reality, which may seem nice for a while, but does not reflect what you actually photographed.
In conclusion, we believe the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is an excellent phone with an amazing set of features, packed up in an attractive body that has succeeded in differentiating itself from many of its premium competitors on the market today: it isn’t bulky, nor huge, it fits decently in your pocket and looks fantastic. But this is not about the style only. Can you honestly and freely name many other top of the line smartphones that are actually fitted with such a powerful camera? We’re talking about a 20,7MP lens – one of the most advanced we’ve encountered on such a device.
